VSucceed - A Website design to connect mentors and students

Project Duration:

July 2022 - September 2022

Responsibilities:

UX Design: User Research, User Flow, Information Architecture, Crazy 8s, Prototyping

UI Design: Colors, Typography, Graphics

The Product:

VSucceed is a website for university that enables students to look up mentors without having to pay any money. Give users the choice to select mentors from a list of professors, former students, or alumni and set up appointments.

The Problem:

1. Students or young professionals who require direction to achieve their goals but lack the means to find or work with a mentor.

2. A university professor is unable to keep track of multiple students' office hours and counseling appointments.

Design Thinking Process

I used the Lean UX framework to complete the job. Because I wanted to engage with users and update in response to their suggestions to satisfy their needs.

Understanding The User

User Research: Summary

I started by identifying the study goal and drafting a document with questions in order to better understand the user. That will help me comprehend their requirements and those of the users for whom I will be building. Following the user interview, I evaluated each insight and selected a handful of insights that would be the most beneficial to address.

Finding 4:
Manage Sessions

Finding 2:
Lacks Confidence

Finding 3:
Lacks Knowledge

Finding 1:
Cost Factor

Students' unwillingness to spend money was the biggest worry.

Hesitation to give money and hire a stranger as a mentor

Some students aren't even aware that they can seek assistance by hiring a mentor.

Professors feel overburdened because of many 1:1 request from students

Personas

Young Student

Kevin, Software Engineer

Kevin is an alumnus who works in the IT industry. Kevin loves to constantly learn and grow himself. So, Kevin feels it will be a good option to share industry knowledge with the student seeking help, and he thinks it will improve his listening and problem-solving skills.

Happy Student

John, Student

John is pursuing a Master of Science in information systems (Align). During his free time, John often tries to do some sort of digital painting or any kind of painting, etc. John wants to make a career in UX design, but he doesn’t have in-depth knowledge about the requirements and where to start, so he wants to find a skilled, knowledgeable mentor to guide him throughout the journey to becoming a UX designer.

Middle Aged Woman

Chengrun, Professor

Chengrun is a part-time lecturer who teaches graduate students twice a week. Chengrun loves to teach anyone who comes to her for help. So, Chengrun would loves to become a mentor for a university.

Information Architecture

I developed an information architecture to better understand the steps users might take to accomplish their goals with a low error rate in order to gain a better understanding of how users will navigate and use the information.

User Flow

To prevent users from becoming trapped while interacting with the product, I built a user flow. I considered users and how they would engage with completing a particular task when I was constructing.

Starting The Design

Low Fidelity - Wireframe

After producing wireframes on paper, I switched to Adobe XD this time to test out the new design tool for creating wireframes and adding links so that it is prepared to conduct usability tests.

High Fidelity

After almost finalizing the screen with low fidelity wireframes, I proceeded to do high fidelity and then perform usability tests on the app design.

Usability Study & Affinity Mapping

In order to identify the common theme and improve my designs, I conducted a moderated usability study with six people and made an affinity map. 100% of tasks were completed successfully. Each user was able to finish the task in the manner I had anticipated.

Final Product

I wasn't expecting this kind of feedback from this usability test. I discovered that most testers thought the text size I picked was a bit too small. I then changed that, and some screenshots of the finished project are seen below.

Takeaway

This was my first time designing a website, and I learned how to manage a large amount of space available for design as well as the significance of consistent text and font size.
