Redesigned the volunteer dashboard and impact page, boosting retention by 25% and driving increased funding from $2,500 to $35,000.

I led a cross-functional team at Democracy Lab to enhance the volunteer experience by redesigning the volunteer dashboard and creating a new impact page. The redesigned dashboard increased volunteer retention by 25%, introducing features like hour logging and activity tracking. The impact page improved transparency for investors and stakeholders, helping to increase funding from $2,500 to $35,000 by showcasing visuals such as active project numbers, volunteer engagement, and fund utilization.

Problem & Gap

Democracy Lab struggled with low donor trust due to a lack of transparency about fund usage and an inability to retain volunteers beyond 3 months due to insufficient recognition of their efforts.

My Role

Led Product design and UX research, including heuristic reviews, competitive analysis, user interviews, sketching, wireframing, and prototype development.

What is Democracy Lab (DLab)?

DLab connect skilled volunteers with the projects that need them. Open to everyone from individuals and established nonprofits to government organizations and for-profit social enterprises — DLab provide an open avenue for a better connection, more efficient collaboration, and increased impact.​

🚨 Why was the company planning to redesign the dashboard?🚨

To find answers, three rounds of tasks were held

  1. ​Meeting with volunteers

  2. Discussions with leadership & donors

  3. Conducted surveys with 67 volunteers

What do I understand from each step?

Volunteers often missed activity tracking and forgot to complete the Google form sent by email.

Volunteers felt their efforts and the time they have dedicated to completing tasks were not being recognized.

Stakeholders and donors complained about not knowing the funds' status due to a lack of updates and website information.

To capture initial ideas without investing too much time and to identify issues and flaws in the current design, we created sketches first and discussed how we can approach the lo-fi and hi-fi designs.

Volunteer Hours & Commitment Tracking

Volunteers can now easily log their hours and extend their commitment directly from their dashboard. This streamlined process makes it simpler for them to stay engaged and keep track of their contributions.

Enhanced Dashboard Tabs

The dashboard now includes three distinct tabs:

  • About: Provides an overview of the volunteer’s profile and contributions.

  • Activity: Displays detailed logs of the volunteer’s hours and tasks.

  • Progress: Tracks the volunteer’s milestones and achievements, showcasing their journey and impact.

  • Achievement badges: Volunteers earn badges based on their tracked hours and progress. These badges can be shared on professional networks like LinkedIn, recognizing their commitment and achievements.

Impact Page for Democracy Lab

To highlight the organization’s impact, we’ve developed a comprehensive page dedicated to:

  • Fund Allocation: Visuals and detailed breakdowns of how funds are utilized, ensuring transparency and trust.

  • Active Projects & Volunteers: Showcases ongoing projects and profiles of active volunteers, illustrating the tangible outcomes of their contributions.

Phase II and Phase III are currently ongoing. They incorporate a meeting notes feature, display other pertinent projects, and enable sharing of achievements on social media platforms. Additionally, efforts are being directed towards enhancing the accessibility of Impact dashboard metrics through color schemes; presently, it does not meet the WCAG AA color contrast standards.
